us arwa damon and ben wedeman. arwa, what's going on in benghazi right now? >> reporter: well, the situation is pretty tense. just about every single libyan that we have been speaking to of course expressing their horror, their outrage about tuesday's attack, saying this most certainly is not indicative of how libyans themselves feel but also really wanting to see their own government begin to take control, begin to rein in these various militias. the government for its part now does believe, says it's 100% confident that tuesday's attack was carried out by extremist group or groups. they say they detained four people, not disclosing which group they were affiliated with but they were also say they go believe this attack was preplanned, intended to inflict damage to drive an irrepairable wedge between the libyans and americans. >> arwa, earlier you walked through what remains of that u.s. consulate in benghazi where ambassador stevens and the three other americans were killed in tuesday's attack and you sent us dramatic video. walk us through what you saw. >> reporter: we walk

of the things they knew was that these groups were present in benghazi, they were well-organized, they have an infrastructure to them. they also knew of the presence of al qaeda sympathizers in the area, pockets of sympathizers. they also knew -- and we found this out from an intelligence source, there was an intelligence cable 48 hours before this attack took place that warned about the presence of this anti-muslim film on the internet. not only that, but that they had seen an up tick in the traffic visiting that site, that obviously this is a sign that this is gaining more popularity. cnn also found out that they had further indications that parts of this film were shown on egyptian television. that was according to an fbi memo that cnn was able to get a hold of. so all the clues were sort of there. now piecing them together was a different story. u.s. sources have told us, intelligence sources, that there was no actionable intelligence. as a matter of fact, the administration has been very open about coming out and saying that. so some clues were there, pulling them all together is a tou

in benghazi at the u.s. consulate there. we've been in touch with the state department, again, they are not coming forthwith a confirmation yet. they do tell us there is one american not identified who has been killed after an attack by islamists. they were protesting an independent film made in the united states said to be critical of the muslim prophet, mohammed, and gotten some play on the super net in the arab world. that is rousing up feelings. according to reports, again, unconfirmed reports, the u.s. ambassador was killed when he and others were trying to get other staffers out of the consulate in benghazi, libya, which was under attack, which have, in fact, burning down. a rocket propelled grenade flying around the car that they were in as they were trying to get in in that very dramatic scene. folks, this followed yet another assault on the u.s. embassy in cairo, egypt yesterday. again, protesters there very angry about this very same film. they scaled the walls. they tore down and burned the u.s. flag there. they displayed a black flag with arabic writing. no injurie

about the attacks in benghazi, it looks that military attacks. it doesn't look like demonstrators crawling all over the wall like in cairo. it looked like something of a different nature. we need to understand and remember that in a massacre that was killed last night sided with the rebels against the government. he was a symbol of openness and democracy in this government's commitment to see a better day for the middle east, which is one of the reasons why he was targeted so specifically last night. megyn: monica, today if you read the press, are questioning why are embassy would be issuing a statement that there is no question that the film sounds incendiary. but in america we believe in free speech. that is one of the fundamental principles of our country. they are questioning why are embassy would feel compelled to weigh in on this statement by private individual that many in the muslim world find offensive. but we in america believe in free speech. >> yes, that's exactly right. that is part of the reason why this was so appalling. when the outrage started to build, they doubl
